Gyr crosses: The future of milking

Gyr cattle are a breed of Zebu cattle that originated in India and were brought to the new world to be bred with beef cattle to increase heat resistance so they would be better adapted for living in hot climates like Florida and Texas. The hidden secret to Gyr cattle is that in India their main function was as a milk cow. States in Mexico and some countries in South America started importing Gyrs and crossing them with more typical milking breeds like Holstein and Jerseys. The result was an impressive milk cow that was heat tolerant, and produced offspring that made excellent beef as well. Recently a Gyr-Holstein cross in Brazil just broke the world record for most milk produced in a single day! 127.57 kg which is 281.24lbs which is approximately 32.7 gallons of milk!  Link to article . Here at Ranczo Brioso we have acquired a Gyr bull that will be bred to our Jersey to produce the perfect heat tolerant hardy duel purpose cattle. Fezzik is an amazing young bull that we can't wait to prove himself at the ranch.
